Book Review

I didn’t believe my love for John Irving could grow any more (I even named my beagle “Owen Meany”) but it certainly did after reading his new novel on Sunday. That’s right. I finished the whole thing in one day.
In One Person tells the story of Billy Abbot, a young bi-sexual man growing up in a small New England town.  He attends an all-boys’ school and is afraid of the “crushes on the wrong people” that plague him. His stepfather introduces him to the town librarian, Miss Frost, who helps Billy gain some insight into his feelings by encouraging him to read classic novels.
While Billy is the focus of the novel, Miss Frost is the character that I will never forget. She is beautiful, smart, and secretive and has a great influence on Billy. She also has the most wonderful line in the whole book:  “My dear boy, please don’t put a label on me—don’t make me a category before you get to know me!”
Irving’s unique descriptions of Billy’s family (including a cross dressing grandfather), friends, and lovers make the book impossible to put down. Irving has the ability to make a reader walk a mile in a character’s shoes. He also takes on the social and political issues that faced America during the 1960’s and the decades that followed. I already miss the wonderful and interesting people I met while reading In One Person.

Cleaning Out and Coming In!

We're cruising right along through our wish list today- especially with the help of this generous donation:

This family cleaned our their "We don't watch these any more" DVDs and brought them to us.  So Blake is busy cataloging all of them!  It's like Christmas around here and we couldn't be more excited.

Looking for ways to help boost our collection?  Well our wishlist is still available to peruse.

We'd love to catalog your favorite movies so everyone can check them out for free!

Wishing Big!

We're not running to the altar or anything, but that doesn't stop us from creating a "Gift Registry" on Amazon.com.  In fact, we've become really, really good at adding items to our wishlist!  Why do we need this wishlist you may ask?  Well, last week, Laura Beth weeded our video collection in order to make more room and update our catalog and she found a lot of items that we get requests for- it's just, they're only available on  VHS.  You remember VHS right?  Remember the rewind button?  Whoa.  Flashbacks.

Anyhoo- our budget can't take on the extra weight of all the items we want, so we created this wishlist.  We are hoping that our patrons will scan the list and donate or purchase a few of the items.  The more donations we get from this list, the more money that frees up for other things (like NEW books or DVDs since these are all older films).

So here's the list.  We hope you'll take a look at it and see if there are any items you'd like to donate.  And if you already own one of these DVDs and would like us to take it off your hands- please bring it by and let us know.  We'd love to catalog it and give it a new home.

Happy Spring!

We aren’t used to brutally cold winters here in Mississippi, but this past season was short and mild. And people are ready to start working on their gardens. Some of us at the library have even put some plants in the ground! We have an extensive collection of gardening books ranging from basic landscaping and lawn care to more specific projects. Curious about what plants grow best in our state? Want to build a tree house? Plant heirloom vegetables? Grow a garden without going broke? We have just the book you need.

Come in and take some home. They are located in nonfiction sections 635, 690, and 712.

Best Seller: Julie Cantrell

We were so fortunate this week so share our auditorium with New York Time's Best Seller Julie Cantrell.  Julie currently lives near Oxford with her family on Valley House Farm where they raise sheep, chickens and goats as well as other farm activities.

We were so delighted with the turn out for her book talk and signing that we wanted to share a few pictures for everyone who couldn't make it.

Julie was so kind to sign books for all 40 plus people who came to see her speak.  And that was a big deal since just that morning she hit the NY Time's Best Sellers list!

Interested in learning more about her book Into the Free?  Check out this sweet video we stole borrowed from her website:

We're completely enamored so we ordered several copies for our patron's use.  Call today and we'd be happy to pull it for YOU too!
